Once upon a time, any books that had queer content had to demonstrate that they were not actually advocating for queerness, so they had to either go straight, die, or go crazy. If I was doing this list by order of which is most classic, I would start with this one, but it violated my cardinal rule: don’t be depressing. It also influenced my very author’s work: Sarah Waters.ĭo not let this be the first Lesbrary book you read. ![]() Written in 1969, but set in the early 19th century, this queer classic also manages to tell a romance between two women without being depressing. I still remember the day I realized I needed to read more queer women books. This 1970s novel is not only a lesbian/queer women classic, it also entertaining and challenges social norms even to this day. The book is a definitive volume that comes in at just under 700 glossy pages. The book reads as a journey from one movement to the next with clear and concise descriptions of the projects and ideas although, occasionally Curtis gets caught up in architectural jargon. William Curtis is careful to acknowledge the different critiques of the movements and to describe how those critiques affected the progression of architectural thought. ![]() Admittedly, Le Corbusier was one of the most important architects of the era and deserves significant coverage, but we wonder if his work is over-represented in the volume. Corb's work appears throughout the volume in a number of chapters. While Curtis covers the major movements and works of architecture from the 1900s, it is clear that he takes a liking to the work of Le Corbusier. Modern Architecture Since 1900 covers all of the major movements and styles in architecture up through the mid-1990s. Rather than focus a single volume on the entire history of architecture, Curtis has narrowed the content of this book down to a bit less than 100 years of architecture.
